Improvising With Bach
We’ll analyze the compositional language of Johann Sebastian Bach, and how it can be translated directly into modern single-line soloing on the guitar.
To explore this, we’ll study two contrasting movements from Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, adapted for electric guitar: Violin Partita No. 1 in B Minor, BWV 1002: II. Double and Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004: I. Allemanda. Throughout 20 detailed excerpts, we'll focus on a wide range of arpeggios, scales, and melodic ideas that can be readily adapted into improvisation and contemporary harmony.

Q&A
What will you cover in “Improvising With Bach”?
- We will explore how to expand and develop your soloing language by learning and analyzing two movements from Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin (composed between 1703 and 1720), adapted by Ben Eunson for electric guitar: Violin Partita No. 1 in B Minor, BWV 1002: II. Double and Violin Partita No. 2 in D Minor, BWV 1004: I. Allemanda.
- These two movements serve as excellent studies in arpeggios, scales, and melodies that can be easily adapted and applied within the context of contemporary harmony. Additionally, both movements fit comfortably within the range of a standard electric guitar with 20–22 frets.
- We will analyze a total of 20 excerpts—10 from each of the two movements explored in this masterclass. This analysis will help develop a modern improvisational language inspired by Bach’s compositional approach.
